Products for pALS

Products and technology recommendations for people with ALS and similar disabilities

Here are some products that I recommend to make life easier with ALS.

ALS is difficult, but recent technology and products can make life much easier. Even with ALS, you can be a good consumer. Problems develop at different rates, so look for simple consumer solutions to your specific problems. If you wait for insurance to cover everything, you might not need it anymore.

Please note that I make a small commission when you use these Amazon links.

I am a huge Apple user, and was so excited to find this eye gaze control for the iPad. I use this every day. It gives you mouse pointer control over the iPad with your eyes. It takes some practice, but it opens the whole world of iPad to your eyes.

Many medical phone holders really stink. I was very impressed with The Joy Factory. I used this mount to suspend my phone from my wheelchair. The magnet system is so secure. I controlled my phone with a mouse because I could not lift my arms. They are expensive for consumer products, but cheaper and better than other medical grade stands.

As my hands, and later the rest of me, stopping working, I really needed to keep my mind occupied. Audio books are great for the time when I don't have a device, especially while waiting for help with moving. There are even a ton of free books included in the subscription. Enjoy books, even if you can't turn the pages.

They are expensive, but I love these fans. We are in Arizona, so moving air around is really important . The fan is engineered to move air efficiently. Even on the lowest setting. But the smart features are the best. With Internet connection and app control, you can use the fan without touch. So I can turn the fan on and off using the app or voice control over Google Home or Alexa.

This has been a great investment from the early days of ALS. As my hands got weaker, I could not hold up my iPhone. This suspended my iPad above me, so I could read in bed or use it while sitting. This is so useful, with a great counterweight to keep the stand stable. Great product!

It is really hard to go shopping in a wheelchair. Amazon delivers almost anything to your door in day, sometimes hours. So, I really love the convenience of shopping from any device without having to leave home.

Many pALS qualify for the discussion discounted membership at 50% off! What a deal!

Smart speakers are really helpful, especially with an eye gaze device.. So many devices are voice activated, so you can pre program certain commands into your device. I use it every day to turn off the fan or broadcast to the rest of the house when I need something. The more connected your house is, the more independent you are despite ALS.

Sometimes you just want to see what is happening. There are many cameras that sell for $100+ but these are just as good as others for way cheaper. These started as simple security cameras, but as my ALS progressed, they become easy ways to stay connected to my home. During my extended hospital stay, I got to enjoy this moment from afar as it happened.

There are many smart deadbolts out there. We chose this one because it attached to our existing lock. I love having a smart lock. It allows me to let people in without moving. And it automatically locks the door after a certain time, so our youngest does not escape.

This is practical, not sexy at all. Sometimes you pee the bed with ALS. It is not fun, but we have been able to avoid diapers with these pads. The description is much more politically correct than mine. But all discretion goes out the door. Practical is the important part. These are comfortable and they do their job.

These suckers are SHARP. You never realize how dull other nail clippers are until you try these. And it does make a difference. This will make it easier on your caregivers and avoid annoying nail burrs that you can't do anything about.

This is great for pALS, not just for dogs. Many times you can find a product made for something else that is perfect for your unexpected need. I needed a soft touch bell that I could ring with my foot or leg to call for assistance. This doorbell for dogs works perfectly. There are medical grade call buttons for much more money, but why? Use what works for cheap.

I love smart light switches. And only recently have I found good switches for 3-way circuits, which are any light where multiple switches control it. We installed this in the garage, and it is great! I love knowing if the garage lights are on from the app and turning them on or off remotely.

You can buy a new smart garage door motor... Or you can just retrofit the existing button. I love being able to control the garage door and getting notified when it is open or closed.

My father in law installed this easily, and it works perfectly. I even get a notification when the kids leave the door open.

As my arms got weaker, adding a spinning knob to my steering wheel helped me keep driving and working. Contrary to popular belief, these are NOT illegal on power steering wheels. This worked very well and requires no tools nor leaves any permanent mark on the steering wheel.

This handle is secure and very useful as your body stops working. It slides under the mattress and puts feet on the floor. I used it for support while dressing, help getting into bed, and help rolling over. You can get others without feet on the floor, but I prefer this one.

This is more for the caregivers. They will find themselves cleaning stuff into the toilet, and it is really convenient to have a little pressurized water there to help.

Enough said.

I am sure you want to feel like a yoga teacher. But my voice got weaker before I lost it completely. So it was nice to have a little volume boost, especially in noisy places. As a bonus, you feel like you have joined a boy band. Really useful.
